There is a lot of talk around Breast Cancer and lumps and the general consensus is that if you find a lump its cancer. This is a myth, most lumps in breast are harmless and benign (non cancerous). Unfortunately a lot of women go through a lot of unnecessary stress when they find a lump. This is not to say that if you find a lump in the breasts you should not visit a doctor, it is very important that if you do discover a lump that you get it checked by a medical practitioner or doctor as soon as possible.

This article is information about the most common benign lumps found in breasts, remember these are all harmless but still warrant a visit to the doctor to be checked out as soon as possible.

  1. Generalised breast lumpiness or fibrocystic – the breasts may feel tender, painful or seem swollen. This sort of lumpiness is often been described as glandular or nodular and is usually in both breasts at the same time.
  2. Fibroadenoma – This is the most common type of solid lump found.   3. Cysts – Very common fluid filled sacs that can become sore, painful and enlarged just before your period. These lumps often disappear on there own, but if they do not, it is necessary to consult your doctor.
  4. Fat Necrosis – These are a solid lump, firm would be a better way to describe them which is caused by damaged tissue. They most notably occur after an injury to the breast tissue.

Remember most lumps are not cancerous, but if you discover one talk to a your medical experts, early detection of cancer increases your survivability odds.

  1. Know what is normal for you
  2. Know what changes to look out for
  3. Look and feel
  4. Discuss any changes with your doctor as soon as possible
  5. Go for routine breast screening.

When you visit your doctor to have any lump checked out, make sure you are happy with the explanation, if you are not then seek a second opinion. It is your health and it is in your hands.
